Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do you have a limit on the number of emails I can send out per day?

A. There is no limit on the number of emails you can send.

Q. Does Concentric support ColdFusion?

A. No, we do not support ColdFusion.

Q. What is Resource Unit?

A. Concentric Clustered Hosting includes a Virtual Dedicated Environment (VDE) that gives each domain customer their own UNIX virtual machine with their own dedicated operating and file systems. Which means Web developers can create custom CGI scripts without security and stability risks and without requiring a review or approval process.

Customers running Custom CGIs are allocated an ample base amount of processing cycles called Resource Units that vary per plan. On average, a well-written script uses one (1) unit each time it runs. Customers may add additional units themselves in the Concentric Center.

Q. Do you offer reseller hosting?

A. Yes, we offer a range of reseller programs so that individuals and organizations from web site designers to carriers, cable companies, and SMB service providers can partner with us to resell our services.

Q. What is clustered hosting?

A. Concentric Clustered Hosting is designed to eliminate the problems inherent with typical shared hosting infrastructures. Our technology provides a ‘clustered’ handling of security, load balancing, and necessary site resources.

Clustered Hosting ‘virtualizes’ your resources beyond the limits of one physical piece of hardware. Your web site and applications are not limited to one server. You access the processing power of many servers and your applications are distributed in real-time. This means that you can purchase as much computing power as you need from a virtually inexhaustible source, and even the largest customer never consumes more than a fraction of a percent of the total server pools’ processing capacity.

Q. What is a Domain Name?

A. A domain is the unique name that identifies an Internet site. Domain Names always have 2 or more parts separated by dots. The part to the left of the dot is the most specific, and the part to the right is the most general. The part to the left of the dot is the name you supply and own.

You may sometimes hear a domain name referred to as a URL (Universal Resource Locator). Technically, a URL would be the entire text as entered into a browser such as; http://www.concentric.com. The http:// tells the Internet how to access the name. This can be further expanded with something called sub-domains. As you might expect, a sub-domain is a domain under the full domain. This is done by adding a subdivision name on the left, such as, http://apple.momspies.com and http://frozen.momspies.com.

Another type of domain is a domain alias. This is another domain name that you set up to point to your main domain. In other words you could set up an alias like www.granniespies.com and when someone enters that URL into their browser their destination would actually be your site at www.momspies.com . With Concentric, you can actually set up aliases to point to separate subdirectories in your UNIX hosted account.

Q. How do I register a Domain Name?

A. Once you have decided on a domain name, you need to register it. It’s easy to register your domain. Check with a domain registrar (a registrar is a company that keeps track of domain registrations) to see if your desired name is free. If it is, you register that name for up to 10 years at a time. You can sign up for a domain name on Concentric.com; we have very competitive pricing on registering domains. Concentric will even supply you with a single web page to tell people your web site is coming. It really is that simple.

Q. Can I migrate a domain to Concentric?

A. Yes. We can work with you to move your site to Concentric.

Q. Can you help me build a web site?

A. Yes. If you would like to do-it-yourself, you can use our online template tool, Web Builder to build your site. Or, if you're more technically inclined, you can build your site from scratch.

If you prefer to have someone “do it for you”, call our Professional Services team at 866-495-9696 and they can help you with your web site development needs.

Q. Where do I find up dial-up access numbers for the Dial Hosting plans?

A. Log in to http://admin.concentric.com and use the Access Number Lookup tool. Click on Help in the top right corner of the web page; then Click on Access Numbers in the navigation bar.

Q. How do I move an existing Web site?

A. Make sure to completely mirror your Web site, any email boxes, and custom DNS settings you may have before you request that your domain registrar change hostnames. The time it takes to propagate your site can be as short as a couple of hours or as long as 72 hours. Replicating all of your services to Concentric® servers removes the risk of your site not being available during that time frame.

There are four things you need to do after your Concentric hosting account is created:

  1. Publish your Web site. Even though your domain and Web site are hosted by another provider, you must publish all site content to your Concentric hosting site.
Note: Concentric offers a convenient work-around to publish your site (which can be used with FTP programs or other publishing software) because using your domain name won't resolve to our servers. When asked for your domain to publish to via FTP, instead of entering yourdomain.com enter ftp.yourdomain.com.concentric.com and log in with your Master Administrator username.
  2. Create all email boxes. If you are going to use the Concentric email service, you must create an email box for every user in your domain (see the Adding Users FAQs in the Concentric Center on how to add new users.)
  3. Create Custom DNS records (if applicable). If you are hosting your own Web site, email, or FTP server, or using another provider for those services, you must customize your DNS records using the Concentric DNS Manager.
  4. Move your domain to Concentric. Once your site and all services are mirrored, you are ready to move your domain to Concentric. Contact your current registrar and request they change the hostnames (also called nameservers) and IP addresses to the following:

    Nameservers
    Primary:  ns1.concentric.com 207.155.248.155
    Secondary:  ns2.concentric.com 207.155.252.155
    Tertiary:  ns3.concentric.com 207.88.20.19

Approximately 72 hours from the time that your current registrar updates the Internet root (GTLD) servers, all ISPs should be updated and directing traffic to Concentric.

Cancel your previous service. We suggest you wait for about 7 days of successful service after moving your domain to Concentric before you close your account with your previous ISP. Make sure you request they delete the zone files for your domain so their nameservers no longer broadcast to the Internet that they host your domain.
