Protect Your Data Using Secure Shell (SSH)

How does this work? When using SSH and SCP, every byte sent between your computer and the Concentric® Clustered Hosting system is encrypted using a public domain cipher. The specific cipher used is dependent upon the client you use to connect with; however, they include many of the computing industry’s most popular scrambling methodologies, including 3DES, AES/Rijndael, and Blowfish. Did You Know? Using Strong Passwords is a Security Must!
It’s very important to create a strong and memorable password for security purposes. Passwords must be strong to keep others from guessing them, and memorable to ensure that you don’t forget it or have to write it down or leave it on a sticky note in a public place. Remember that passwords are often ‘guessed’ by automatic programs that scan dictionaries and try common combinations of words and misspellings, so while you might think that no one would ever guess ‘cheesecake’ as your password, someone’s ‘bot’, or automated program, will do just that.
Some techniques for creating a strong and memorable password include:
- Avoid dictionary words or simple combinations.
- Pick a phrase or statement that can be memorable to you once you know it, but isn’t obvious to others.
- Avoid short passwords (less than seven characters), but if your password is longer than eight characters, make sure
- that the first eight are also strong, as many systems are only sensitive up to eight characters.
- Use symbols and capitalization to increase the combinatorics depth of your password – but do not just use
- single-character ‘elite’ replacements of letters.
- Don’t use obvious variants of previous passwords.
Some good passwords and their mnemonics:
- eM?n2tml (’eat Mayonnaise ? never 2 touch my lips’)
- 31lox4T (’31 lox for tea’)
- bynf573b (a random string)
Some BAD passwords, and why:
- 4boxcar (dictionary word is most of the password)
- $tarfl33t (visual replacement of characters in a dictionary word)
- 53mainst (your address)
- roadkill#^8_q (first 8 characters are a dictionary word)
Additional important information:
- Don’t use one of the above examples as your password.
- Don’t write down your password.
- Do log into your account several times after changing your password, to make sure you know and remember the new password.
- If you need to use a password-saving program, use only those provided with your browser or operating system, not third parties (which often contain spyware or other security threats), make sure that the password database is itself protected by a core password or your account credentials, and ensure that it’s backed up so you don’t lose all your passwords if you reinstall your system.
- Never give out your password in an instant message or e-mail conversation or share it with anyone else.
- Don’t log into your account from links in e-mail you receive, or other websites. Always type the URL to your account to log in, or use a bookmark.
- Use separate passwords for all your core critical accounts (banks, email, etc). It’s generally acceptable to share passwords at non-sensitive sites like news sites where personal information or billing relationships are not at risk.
